Steve Swallow is one of the most creative jazz musicians of the last four decades. Top bassist, composer and producer, in 1970 he left his double bass to deal with electric bass and create his unique and personal sound.
He was born in 1940 and began playing bass at fourteen, after having first studied piano and trumpet. His otherwise miserable adolescence was brightened by his discovery of jazz, as he said. He studied composition at Yale University with Donald Martino and started playing Dixieland with musicians such as Pee Wee Russell, Buck Clayton, Vic Dickenson.
Many and different artists have collaborated with him. They have recorded his compositions or played same. Among them are Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Gary Burton, Carla Bley, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield and others.
In Greece he comes with the pioneer of free jazz, composer, pianist, singer and writer Carla Bley, his mate in life and art, Chris Cheek on tenor saxophone, Steve Cardenas on guitar and Jorge Rossy on drums. They will present a retrospection of his work from the 60's until today.
