Pianist and composer with significant activity in culture and activism is among the most dynamic musicians with worldwide influence. Danilo Pérez is the UNESCO Artist for Peace, Founder and Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival and Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Bonston's Berklee College of Music.
He was born in Panama in 1965. Aged ten he was studying classical piano at the "National Conservatory of Panama" and later he studied jazz composition at the historic Berklee College of Music. As a student he performed with famous musicians such as Jon Hendricks, Terence Blanchard, Slide Hampton, Claudio Roditi and Paquito D'Rivera.
Through all these experiences and live performances he was established as a promising young musician. He collaborated both in concerts and in albums with artists such as Steve Lacy, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton and Roy Haynes and in 2000 he played next to Wayne Shorter, in the prestigious Shorter's quartet.
Pérez has begun since 1993 his personal recordings and has released albums earning Grammy and nominations. Among them the "Central Avenue" (1989), "Motherland" (2000) and "Across The Crystal Sea" (2008).
In 1996 he was invited by Tommy Lipuma for cooperation in order to produce the historical Panamonk, a touching tribute to the legendary Thelonious Monk, which according to "DownBeat" magazine is one of the most important Jazz piano albums.
In 2010 he released the album "Providencia", which was nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award in the category of “Best Instrumental Jazz Album”.
