“There is little Mahogany cannot do” we read in New Yorker magazine, while Newsweek describes him as “the standout jazz vocalist of his generation.”
Born and raised in Kansas comes from a family for which the music was necessary, as it was the language itself. Though he began his musical education from an early age by learning various instruments (piano and clarinet which he started teaching when he was 14) soon he ended in baritone saxophone. As a saxophonist he began to appear in the local orchestra of Eddie Baker until he was accidentally (when he was already at the University) “discovered” as a special vocal talent. Very soon he created a vocal ensemble singing jazz and R 'n' B. He completed his studies with a Bachelor in music, theater and language.
In early 90’s he released his first album “Double Rainbow” that made him widely known. This was followed by many other successful albums. He appeared in known scenes and Festivals and had also special appearances with major orchestras such as the Count Basie Orchestra.
Kevin Mahogany is celebrating 20 years of his career with a tour and comes to Greece for an original and interesting collaboration with Dimitris Kalantzis quartet.
Pianist and composer Dimitris Kalantzis is one of the most important personalities of jazz in Greece. He has worked among others with Andy Sheppard, Alex Foster, Ralph Peterson, Rex Richardson, Dennis Baptiste, Abram Wilson, Ron Affif. After his albums with jazz adaptations of music by Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis, his tributes to Coltrane and Benny Golson, he meets with his quartet Kevin Mahogany for the first time.
