It is our sound. A time in the past that influenced today’s Greek music in the most absolute and decisive manner. You can distinguish Greece in the global cultural mosaic while listening to a baglama playing a melody of Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis or Apostolos Kaldaras. It's so simple and obvious that the trend of redefining our cultural roots leads unwittingly to the history that once constituted the most marginalized form of urban art project.
Rebetiko song is probably the most typical impression of the hard life of the working class in the past. The relief of pain for injustice, betrayal and immigration, which finds the space to present itself in the most lyrical and emotional version.
Day by day we come to the conclusion that more unites us than divides us with the past. What if it is today, tomorrow, now. The same uncertainty, the same darkness, an underlying optimism, and apparently a new wave of art, or more correctly a new wave of artists, looking ahead, but not afraid to gather what they loved from the “past”. Most of the times they do not hesitate and furthermore they look for it.
“Retropolis II live sessions” is one of such efforts to prove and show this trend. A wink to the past, with a pledge of respect to what is really worth and defines us artistically and as a people. Adam Tsarouhis, Elias Vamvakousis, Fotini Velesiotou, Leonidas Maridakis, Iro Saia, Victoria Tagouli , Marina Satti, Yannis Linas and Efstathios Drakos and Maria Karetsou of Minor Project will all sing together, like an old rebetiko company, the songs adapted for Retropolis II collection and also a series of songs that heavily marked the history of Greek music.
