Born in Louisiana into a musical family from parents at age of four he got his first trumpet and began learning and by age nine was sitting-in together with his father with The Young Tuxedo Brass Band. Three years later he was a member of the All Star Brass Band that performed and toured in USA and Europe.
Besides trumpet and music theory he learned to play many instruments such as piano, bass, drums, tuba, clarinet, saxophone, trombone. Nicholas Payton attended classes at the University of New Orleans, where he studied with Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste.
He played and recorded with artists such as Joe Henderson, Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Michael White, Roy Hargrove.
His recording career began in 1992 with the album “From this Moment”, in 1994 he performed on the soundtrack for the movie “Kansas City” and in 1997 he received a Grammy Award for the collaborative album with the veteran trumpeter Doc Cheatham.
He has released albums such as “Payton's Place”, “Nick @ Night”, “Dear Louis”, a tribute to Louis Armstrong, “Sonic Trance”, “Into the Blue”', “# BAM - Live at Bohemian Caverns”.
