Iyeoka

Daughter of Nigerians with a PhD from Boston University, Iyeoka grew up in Boston and began working as a practical pharmacist, before she was introduced to the public as a poet, singer, activist and educator. In her native language her name means “I want to be respected”.

With the band “The Rock by Funk Tribe” she was able to mix her poetry with jazz, blues, funk, and gospel. She released her first album “Black and Blues” in 2004, with songs, whose lyrics were based on poems. In 2007 she presented her second work “Hum The Bass Line”, in 2008 she recorded her “Live @ KTUH-Honolulu” in Hawaii. The same year she sang the success of U2, “Desire”, by participating in the album “In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2”, with adaptations of songs of the band. Grammy-winning artists and emerging African musicians participated in this. Among them: Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, Vieux Farka Toure, Vusi Mahlasela, Soweto Gospel Choir. The revenues from its sales were donated to the Global Fund.

In 2009 she decided to change her sound, she worked with the producer David Franz and presented two EPs “This Time Around” and “Run Into the Rain”. Elements of pop, R & B, dance, and hip hop in music created electronic-soul sound. In 2010 she released her latest album “Say Yes” with two poems and nine songs, among them “Simple Falling” which became a hit in our country.

“My goal is simple ... I just want to move the world one poem at a time” says Iyeoka who won the 2nd prize in the Individual World Poetry Slam and tells her stories...
