Kenny Garrett is a saxophonist, flutist and bandleader with a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years and has won Grammy awards.
From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has brought his own unique sound.
There are many who remember him from his presence next to Miles Davis, his mentor by many, since he has similarities, both in spirit and gestures. Garrett often played with his back to the audience as Miles Davis did. The comparisons are not missing, something he is now accustomed with and has said:
“I was in Miles' band for about five years. I think that tag will always be there. That is five years of my life. That's the only musical situation that I was there longer than a year. It was a good five years. I have gotten used to that. Some people became aware of me through Miles and then they would come to my concerts. I think that is part of my history and I am proud of that. I am still trying to carve out my own name and my own music. I just look at it as a part of history and it is going to be there. Every time they mention Kenny Garrett, there will probably be some association with Miles Davis, but at the same time, when they mention Herbie Hancock, they always mention Miles Davis, or Wayne Shorter. You get used to it after a while.” allaboutjazz.com.
Kenny Garrett besides his interpretation as a musician, has recorded personal compositions and he will present them to us in two concerts he will give in our country.
His recent work “Seeds From The Underground” with original compositions is truly an homage to those who have inspired and influenced him, both personally and musically .
“All of these songs are dedicated to someone,” he says . “And the “seeds” have been planted, directly or indirectly, by people who have been instrumental in my development.”
