Chick Corea & Gary Burton

Two “legends” of jazz in a unique “conversation”

“Literally speaking a solo appearance is equal to a monologue and a collaboration with a band to a panel discussion. But a duet with Chick Corea is a loud conversation with your best friend. You know what he will say even before he spellls it out, so you can now go one step further. The discussion goes on fire and you feel free to experience each thought or emotion.”

The words belong to Gary Burton and are indicative of how the genius vibraphonist perceives his long and deep professional and personal relationship with the leading American pianist. One of the longer and stronger collaborations in jazz, which started from an accidental event in 1972. The Jazz Festival in Munich that year was dedicated to the art of solo and five soloists of an equal number of musical instruments were invited to initiate the public into a pioneering concept for the musical performance. When the artistic director of the event looked for a spectacular finale for the Festival,  Chick Corea and Gary Burton made a spontaneous duet on the “La Fiesta”.

Attracting since then immediately a huge success , which continues until today,  the two musicians, regardless of their individual activities, collaborate on a constant basis renewing their repertoire, making appearances and adding to the common discography new recordings. Since 1972 when they cooperated for the famous “Crystal Silence” to their last cd “Hot House”, Chick Corea and Gary Burton have  several times  captured on record their brilliant musical “dialogues” as in the album “Duet” in 1979, “In Concert” in 1980, “Native Sense” in 1997, “The New Crystal Silence” in 2008.

The concert at the Megaron draws material from this very rich repertoire of their common career for four decades and their last work as well. In this we find unique adaptations of classic sounds of jazz, of works by composers with whom they worked in the past or who exercised great influence over them: from Kurt Weill and Antonio Carlos Jobim to Thelonious Monk  and to Lennon & Mc Cartney.
