She comes from a musical family, her father Dave Parlato was the bassist of Frank Zappa and of famous jazzmen. She studied ethnomusicology and was the first singer who was accepted in 2001 to Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance. Two years later she won the first prize at the International Competition of Jazz Song of this institution. Immediately afterwards she began participations, which currently are more than fifty, in albums of famous artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Kenny Barron, Lionel Loueke and Terence Blanchard. She has worked with Wayne Shorter.
In 2005 she presented her first album which got great reviews and opened the way for recognition. This was followed by other two, the most recent been the Lost and Found which was released in 2011 with her own songs and adaptations of R & B songs, in which she collaborated with Robert Glasper.
She has already received many distinctions; newspapers and magazines such as Jazz Times, New York Times, Village Voice, Billboard always place her high on lists of the best albums and has gained the appreciation of jazz legends.
