The popular and highly esteemed to Greeks band prepares their luggage and the most popular songs from their 18 years career and on Wednesday, July 11th climbs on Lycabettus stage with fun for a memorable concert full of music and dancing.
The founder Thomas Lauderdale will be next to the explosive and talented singer Storm Large, since China Forbes was medically forced to speechlessness.
“I always wished to have a chance for our cooperation. She is a brilliant, charismatic and captivating artist who could easily be compared to Jane Mansfield!! Although it is regrettable that China Forbes will not be able to finally play with us, I was very pleased to introduce Storm Large to the audience” he said.
The songs of Pink Martini are described as a musical journey and take us from France of the inter-war period to mysterious Arabia, from today's New York to Havana of the 30's, from exotic Saint-Tropez to mystical China. They manage with a magical mix of retro and jazz patterns, rock and pop rhythms to flirt with people's mood, dragging their bodies in a spontaneous rock. Who hasn't sung with languid mood “Je ne veux pas travailler”, whispered the lyrics of “Amado mio”, looked back singing “The Children of Piraeus” dreamed while listening to “Una notte a Napoli”?
“So inevitably our repertoire is widely different. In a moment you think you are in the middle of a samba festival in Rio de Janeiro, next you're in a French cabaret of 1930 or some palazzo in Naples. It's like an urban musical journey. We are a band from America, but spend a lot of time outside, which is why we have the incredible diplomatic opportunity to represent and present a different America! America remains the most heterogeneous population country in the world and consists of people of different nationalities, with different language and religion” explains Thomas Lauderdale.
Pink Martini was formed in 1994 by pianist, graduate of Harvard, Thomas Lauderdale, as a small band of four people based in Portland, Oregon. His fellow student singer China Forbes joined the band in 1997, having worked with him many times in the past.
They released their first album “Sympatique” in 1997 in their own production, selling over 1.3 million copies worldwide. The following year they made their debut in Europe at the Cannes Film Festival, accompanied by Oregon Symphony Orchestra and received rave reviews. Since then they toured with great success in several countries, including France, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, Taiwan, Lebanon, and appeared either alone or accompanied by various orchestras. In 2004 the band released “Hang On Little Tomato”, in 2007 “Hey Eugene!”, in 2009 “Splendor In The Grass”, in 2010 “Joy To The World”. In the fall of 2011 they presented two productions, “A Retrospective”, a collection of the most beloved songs of their career and “1969” an album in collaboration with the legendary Japanese singer Saori Yuki.
