Carmen Souza

The new diva of Cabo Verdean World Jazz sounds

She started singing young at a Gospel Choir and was influenced by musicians such as Luis Morais, Nina Simone or Billie Holiday. The leading Portuguese bassist Theo Pas'cal, producer and mentor of Carmen Souza, urged her to hear the top Jazz of Bill Evans, Hancock, Miles or Horace Silver and this played a role in her musical career.

Her first album in 2005 was a great success, with much interesting material in Creole dialect, where the traditional rhythms of Cabo Verde and mornas, combined with modern jazz forms and gave a completely different dimension to the music of Cape Verde. In the same year after getting rave reviews by the international press, she was invited in the famous Womad Festival in England and then to all the festivals of the world. This was followed by two very successful albums, “Verdade” and “Protegid” which was proposed for the best world music album in 2010.

Carmen Souza from Cape Verde is a unique musical presence. She has huge popularity and demand in all the jazz scenes of the world and is artistically placed at the “meeting” of the traditional music of Cabo Verde and the world Jazz.
