Angelique Kidjo, Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and Grammy Award Winner, could be easily called the greatest African voice of our times. Time Magazine addressed her as “Africa’s premier Diva”.
Many call her a contemporary Miriam Makeba. Kidjo was awarded woman of the Year in 2009 by the New York Women’s Foundation while enjoying the worldwide success of “Djin-Djin”, a record which is a trademark in the history of contemporary music. She goes on her musical journey with humility, stating: “Music heals, unites and tears down all walls. It erases distress and represses wars. When you are listening to music, the mind follows the soul. I am not afraid of any kind of music which is different from mine, because deep down we all speak the same language”.
The well accomplished African Diva keeps surprising us with her new album “Oyo”. Following the excellent cooperation with Carlos Santana, Alicia Keys, Branford Marsalis, Joss Stone, Peter Gabriel and Amadou &Mariam, which we enjoyed at “Djin-Djin”, we see that Angelique Kidjo’s music transcends all boundaries, since the results of her cooperation with the above mentioned artists, dive into afro-funk reggae, salsa rhythms and they emerge through the melody of soul, rock, gospels and jazz. The remake of Gimme Shelter of the Rolling Stones, along with Joss Stone and the “Pearls” of Sade, sounds like a cry of despair for the issues of the Third World Children.
