Ottmar Liebert with his band Luna Negra, are on tour in Europe and will be coming to Badminton Theater for a concert. Being one of the most popular and highly notable guitarists - five times a candidate for the Grammy award – he will take us on a journey with his music and perform hits from throughout his career.
He was born in Cologne from a Chinese-German father and a mother from Hungary. He began playing guitar at 11 years old. He traveled in Europe and Asia eager to know as much music as possible from any musical tradition he encountered.
After having followed his Rock and Roll dreams first in his native country Germany and then in Boston, he left the disappointments of the East Coast and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In 1989 he founded his band Luna Negra, and presented the album “Nouveau Flamenco” in his own personal production entitled “Marita: Shadows and Storms”. The local artist Frank Howell distributed the album in his galleries.
When the album found its way to radio stations and had an unprecedented acceptance by the audience, Higher Octave Music Company released a more integrated version. The “Nouveau Flamenco” became 16 times platinum in the U.S., platinum in Australia and New Zealand, gold in Canada and Mexico.
“I was honestly happy playing this music in hotels and restaurants in Santa Fe, and going in one year from doing that to opening for Miles Davis was a pretty intense jump,” he recalls. “Most shocking for me was to realize how many different people from so many diverse cultures embraced it. I still get letters from fans in Europe, South-America, Australia, and Asia...it’s been a really gratifying experience. I’ve had the opportunity to play in a wide variety of cultural settings with musicians from around the world, and that has been a great experience, too.”
Ottmar Liebert's words from his personal site.
Since then he has presented many albums like the collection of “Euphoria” (1995), “Viva!” (1995), the double cd “Opium” (1996), the “Leaning into the Night” (1997), “Little Wing” ( 2001), “In the Arms of Love” (2002), “The Santa Fe Sessions” (2003), “La Semana” (2004), “Winter Rose” (2005) and others. The “One Guitar” (2006), is his first recording with solo guitar, which gave him his fourth nomination for Grammy Award . The new releases are the “Up Close” (2008), “The Scent Of Light” (2008), a work which took him five years to complete and the “Petals on the Path” (2010).
