The music of John Coltrane was a completely different sound for the fourteen years old Jan Garbarek. He bought his album “Giant Steps” and dreamed to be able to play that way. He was looking to find his own way, his music language to express his feelings and thoughts.
“The sax sounds like a wailing, screaming like mournful” the Times of London wrote.
He tries to sing through it. The Norwegian composer and saxophonist does not hide himself behind labels and explores sounds from around the world. He believes that different kinds of music relate to each other and are like the languages we speak.
He began his career in the late 60's and has collaborated with musicians like Keith Jarrett, Egberto Gismonti, Nana Vasconcelos, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Mari Boine, Anouar Brahem.
In Greece he became more known for his participation in the music of Eleni Karaindrou for the film "Beekeeper" (1986), by Theo Angelopoulos.
“He converted the saxophone in a primitive wind instrument that touches the Greek land and embraces the Balkans” as she said.
He performed many times in our country thrilling and moving the audience that watched. In Hirodium, in Epidaurus, in the ancient theater at Dodoni, in Lycabettus and elsewhere.
In the concert he will give in Megaron Mousikis Athinon he will collaborate with the great Indian musician and composer Trilok Gurtu and will present music from his long career.
