Welcome to the world of Amadou & Mariam, a realm that extends from the dusty streets of Bamako to the main stage of Glastonbury and from the tradition of Mali to the opening of the football World Cup in Johannesburg.
Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Dumbia were born and raised in Mali. Mariam in the capital Bamako and Amadou 800 miles away in Mopti. At 6 years old Mariam lost her sight, a disadvantage that did not stop her from becoming the most famous singer of weddings and traditional ceremonies in her community. Amadou lost also his sight in his childhood, but nonetheless his love for music led him to deal first with percussion instruments and then with the guitar. Their paths crossed in 1977 at the Institute of blind young people in Bamako.
In recent years with the creation of big albums “Welcome to Mali” and “Dimanche a Bamako” Amadou & Mariam began an epic journey to reach the top and they succeeded ,having been recognized as the couple with the biggest sales, but also as the most favorite couple Africa has shown in the last century
On this journey they worked with major artists such as Manu Chao,Coldplay, Pink Floyd, Scissor Sisters and Damon Albarn. They also played in the ceremony of Nobel Prize for Peace in honor of Barack Obama.
They accomplished all this without making “deductions” as they remain faithful to their roots. The unique blend of pop melody with heady pace pulled from Amadou's guitar and the voice changes offer a unique acoustic effect. This music is made for the world and not for the music of the world. Sounds that know no borders, labels and fashions. Sounds loved from Africa, Europe, America and worldwide.
