Cesaria Evora & Lura

Cesaria Evora was born in Mindelo, Cape Verde in 1941 and began to sing from her teenage years. Her first record “La Diva aux Pieds Nus” was recorded in Paris in 1988 when she was 47 years old. Various albums followed such as “Distino di Belita” in 1990, “Mar Azul” in 1991, “Miss Perfumado” in 1992 and many more until the latest “Nha Sentimento”. Media compared her to Billie Holiday and the world was thrilled with the “blues” from Cape Verde.

With musical influences from her homeland, Portugal, Brazil and Cuba, Cesaria Evora has won prestigious awards such as the Grammy in world music.

She has given concerts in many parts of the world, she chooses to appear on stage barefoot and does not forget the difficult years that passed. She is a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN with activity that shows her sensitivity to the problems of the world. She has collaborated with many artists such as Caetano Veloso, Goran Bregovic, but also with Greek artists such as Eleftheria Arvanitaki and Dimitra Galani.

The “Queen of ethnic music” as they call her, overcame serious health problems and comes again in our country for a concert. This time she will sing with Lura, the singer many consider as her heir.

Lura was born in Lisbon in 1975 and remains closely tied to her homeland and the culture of her family which is from Cape Verde.

“I sing the music of my parents’ country. I am linked particularly with Santiago and Santo Antao, since these are the islands where my father and mother come from . To sing the music of Cabo Verde is like living the experiences I didn’t even knew” she explains in French.

She began to sing from the age of 17. The album titled “Di Korpu ku Alma”, as well as the next one “M’bem di Fora” released in 2006, was liked by the audience and critics. Her latest work is “Eclipse” and as she says “my career so far has been a constant surprise, from the time I found out my voice in adolescence, until now. I live each day, step by step, but I'm sure I will continue to sing for the rest of my life. I don’t know why.”

Lura has traveled to many places, winning over the audience in various countries, while in Greece she came in the summer of 2009, in the Athens Festival.
