Gianluigi Trovesi & Gianni Coscia

Jazz from Italy

The saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Gianluigi Trovesi is a great presence in European jazz with influences from American tradition. When he was twenty years old he had the good fortune to listen closely to Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy in Milan, in 1964, which had a decisive role in his course in the music scene. He has released many albums since 1978, when he presented “Baghet” with his trio, either alone or in collaboration with other leading musicians.

Gianni Coscia was practicing law for years before he devoted himself to accordion. He expresses himself in the language of jazz, but explores the “peripheral values” of popular and artistic traditions.

Gianluigi Trovesi and Gianni Coscia as a duo have won awards, positive reviews and critical praise like Umberto Eco.

“Music deliberately provocative. Always move to a point where the listener never expects to find them ... Bringing together apparently irreconcilable traditions, is an appeal to the spirits of musical families that they never were.”

The Italian tradition, the tunes of the film “Il Postino”, the legacy of the Modern Jazz Quartet, the music from the TV Pinocchio and other themes were presented in the album “In Cerca di Cibo”. “In search of food” in 2000 was discussed a lot for its originality.  “Round about Weill” followed in 2004, a special presentation of music of Kurt Weill ..

The two Italian musicians open the program for the period 2011-2012 in the Main Stage of the Onassis Cultural Centre. They improvise, are self sarcastic, have a sense of humor precisely because they take very seriously their work and role. They give the answer to rhetorical concerns of Frank Zappa ...

“Is there a place for the humor in music?”

Do not be surprised if at the concert, Gianluigi Trovesi and Gianni Coscia  turn to the audience and say

“Clap your hands to finish. This composition has no end!”
